Sjobergs Elite 2000 workbench, front view

A woodworking bench or a mechanic's bench

Both are called workbenches, and they do opposite jobs. A woodworking bench is built to hold the work still while you cut, plane and chisel it. A mechanic's bench is built to carry weight and keep tools within reach. Decide which job you do most, and the choice between the two families we carry is usually made before you compare models.

Every figure below comes from our product pages, which follow Sjobergs' and Beta's published documentation.

The woodworking bench: Sjobergs

Sjobergs benches are timber throughout — birch or beech tops on a trestle frame — with vises and rows of dog holes that hold a board flat on the top or upright against the side. Four bench dogs come with every bench except the compact Nordic 1350. What they do not have is drawer storage built in: every bench except the Nordic 1350 has its own storage cabinet that mounts under it, sold as a configuration.

Bench Top Top length Working height Vise capacity Weight
Junior/Senior Solid birch 33-15/32 in. 25-3/16 or 33-7/8 in. (two leg sets included) 4-1/2 in. 48 lb
Nordic 1350 Birch, on a pine trestle 53-1/8 in. 33-7/8 in. 4-1/2 in. 66 lb
Nordic Plus 1450 Birch 52-3/4 in. 33-7/8 in. 4-1/2 in. 68 lb
Scandi Plus 1-1/2 in. beech 52-1/4 or 68-1/8 in. 35-7/16 in. 4-1/2 in. 127 or 146 lb
Elite 2000 3-11/32 in. solid beech, oiled 71-3/32 in. 35-7/16 in. 5-3/4 in. 275 lb

The two Nordic benches suit a garage wall or a shared shop. The Nordic Plus 1450's two vises mount in any of four positions, for a left- or right-handed user or for long work held at both ends. The Scandi Plus is the heavier beech bench for a serious hobbyist, in two lengths. The Elite 2000 is Sjobergs' professional bench, and an optional clamping platform takes its working surface to 98 in.

The constraints: Sjobergs benches ship by freight truck from the US distributor and need assembly. A delivery to a residence carries a $100 residential delivery fee, and liftgate service is $75 if you need it — both are part of the shipping charge, so you see them before you order. Sjobergs covers its benches and cabinets for 10 years under its published warranty terms.

The mechanic's bench: Beta C58BC

The Beta C58BC is a steel-framed bench, 29.5 in. deep, in a 63 in. or an 83 in. length. It is one freestanding working position that arrives as a workstation rather than a run to be planned. The worktop is multi-ply wood or stainless-steel-coated MDF, and the static load rating is 2,205 lb on the 63 in. models and 1,764 lb on the 83 in.

Under the top, you choose the storage: an open steel frame, or two to eight drawers, with a lockable door module on some layouts. Every drawer is Beta's 14.4 × 23.1 in. format and takes up to four foam or thermoformed tool trays, so the tools you use at the bench live in it. Drawers come in Beta orange or anthracite at the same price.

The constraint: the C58BC is a special-order line, built to order and routed through Beta's Pennsylvania facility, so lead time is typically 6–8 weeks. See our C58BC range guide for every layout.

How we would choose

  • You build furniture, cut joinery or plane boards: a Sjobergs bench, sized to the longest work you hold and the wall you have.
  • You work on engines, parts and assemblies, and want the tools in the bench: the Beta C58BC.
  • A younger woodworker in the house: the Sjobergs Junior/Senior, which raises to adult height later.
  • You want a bench, storage and a wall system in one run: neither — look at the Beta lines in Which Beta storage line fits your garage?

If you are not sure, send us what you make, the wall length and the ceiling height through the contact page, and we will tell you which bench fits.
