Description

The Emporia Pro is a Level 2 EV charger with load management built in. It charges at up to 48 A hardwired, and the Vue 3 energy monitor in the box watches your whole panel, so the charger slows down when the house is busy and speeds back up when it is not.

That is how a panel with little spare capacity can run a Level 2 charger, often without a service upgrade. Your electrician and local inspector decide whether it works for your house. The same monitor reports the whole home's energy use in the Emporia app.

Shipping and Delivery

Delivery: Free shipping on most orders within the continental United States; Alaska and Hawaii are excluded.

Dispatch: It ships from Emporia by parcel carrier, at about 20 lb boxed.

At delivery: Check the box and the charger before you sign, and contact us within 48 hours with photos if anything arrives damaged.

Key Features

PowerSmart load management: Reads the panel through the Vue 3 about 3,000 times a second and adjusts the charge rate to keep the home under its service rating.

Fallback rate: If load management is ever unavailable, the charger drops to a guaranteed rate your electrician sets from the panel's spare capacity.

48 A, 11.5 kW: Hardwired, or 40 A and 9.6 kW from a NEMA 14-50 outlet.

J1772 or NACS: The NACS connector has a built-in UHF sensor that opens a Tesla's charge port as you approach.

Whole-home monitoring: Household energy use in the Emporia app, with room for up to 16 circuit sensors, sold separately.

Solar and peak rates: Charges from surplus solar where you have it, and shifts charging away from peak-rate hours.

Outdoor rated: A watertight NEMA Type 4 enclosure, rated for -22°F to 122°F.

Low profile: A slimmer body than the Classic, with a rear-entry option that hides a hardwired feed in the wall.

What's Included

In the box: The Emporia Pro with its 25 ft cable and J1772 or NACS connector, a power cable with a NEMA 14-50 plug or a hardwire whip, a mounting bracket and screws, a wall-mounted connector holder with screws and drywall anchors, and the Vue 3 kit: the energy monitor, two 200 A current sensors, a wire harness, a Wi-Fi antenna, and splicing wires with wire nuts.

Installation and Compatibility

Electrician work: The Vue 3 mounts inside the service panel with its sensors around the mains, so this is a job for a licensed electrician. Charger and monitor go in on the same visit. Installation is not included. Have your electrician confirm the panel rating, breaker space and any local GFCI rule before the charger arrives.

Connector: Match it to your car's port. J1772 fits most non-Tesla EVs in North America, and NACS fits Tesla and other NACS vehicles.

Service rating and fallback: Your electrician enters the panel's service rating in the app, plus a guaranteed charge rate worked out with an NEC Article 220 load calculation.

Breaker: A dedicated 60 A double-pole breaker for 48 A hardwired, or 50 A for the 40 A plug-in. On a smaller breaker, the charge rate is set lower in the app behind a PIN: 32 A on 40 A, 24 A on 30 A, or 16 A on 20 A.

Wire: 6 AWG copper rated 90°C for a 48 A hardwired circuit.

NEMA 14-50 outlet: It must be an industrial-grade receptacle rated for continuous duty at 50 A, such as Hubbell, Leviton, Bryant or Cooper (Eaton). A standard residential outlet is not built for nightly EV charging.

GFCI breakers: The charger has its own ground-fault protection, so a GFCI breaker on the same circuit can trip without cause. Where code requires a GFCI breaker on a 14-50 outlet, choose the hardwired version.

Mounting: The bottom of the charger at least 24 in above the floor, with the connector holder at least 12 in to the side.

Network: The Emporia app and a Wi-Fi connection are needed to switch on PowerSmart. The Vue 3 can also run on an Ethernet cable brought into the panel.

Setup help: Questions about installation, setup or the app come to us first.

Warranty

Term: 3 years from the date of delivery on the charger, against defects in materials and workmanship, for chargers installed in North America following the included installation guide.

Vue 3 monitor: 1 year from the date of delivery.

Not covered: Water damage, use outside the installation guide or Emporia's instructions, and changes to the hardware, including drilled holes. Labor for diagnosis, removal or reinstallation is not covered, and neither is shipping a faulty unit back.

Claims: Keep your order confirmation. Contact us first with your order number and a description of the fault, and we take the claim to Emporia. Emporia repairs or replaces the faulty hardware, or refunds what was paid for it.

Replacement first: When Emporia sends a replacement charger first, the faulty one goes back within 2 weeks of the replacement being installed.

Returns: Within 30 days of delivery, unused and in the original packaging, under our return and refund policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still need a panel upgrade?

Often not. PowerSmart keeps the house under its service rating while the car charges. Your electrician and local inspector decide whether that works for your panel, so ask them before you order.

Can I use the Pro without the Vue 3?

Load management needs the Vue 3, which is why it comes in the box. If load management is unavailable, the charger falls back to the guaranteed rate set at installation.

Which connector for a Tesla?

NACS plugs straight in and opens the charge port as you walk up. J1772 needs a J1772-to-NACS adapter, which is not included. On the Pro, both connectors are the same price.

How is it different from the Classic?

Both charge at up to 48 A hardwired or 40 A plug-in, with a 25 ft cable, a NEMA Type 4 enclosure and a 3-year warranty. The Pro adds PowerSmart load management, whole-home monitoring, solar and peak-rate charging, and a slimmer body with a rear-entry option. If your panel has room for a dedicated 60 A circuit and you only want to charge, the Classic is the simpler choice, and the PowerSmart Upgrade kit can add load management to it later.

Will it slow my charging?

Only when the rest of the house is drawing heavily. The rest of the time it charges at the full rate your breaker allows.

Who it is for

Level 2 charging without the panel upgrade

The Emporia Pro is a 48-amp Level 2 charger that comes with a Vue 3 energy monitor for your electrical panel. Together they run PowerSmart, Emporia's load management: the charger adjusts its draw against everything else in the house so the total stays within the panel's safe capacity. Emporia states that PowerSmart is UL-certified and accepted under the National Electrical Code (NEC) as an alternative to a panel upgrade. If your panel already has room for a dedicated 60-amp circuit and you only want to charge, the Emporia Classic is the simpler choice.

What sets the Pro apart

  • PowerSmart included

The Vue 3 monitor in your panel lets the charger stay within the panel's rating

  • UL-certified, NEC-accepted

Emporia positions PowerSmart as the code-accepted alternative to a panel upgrade

  • Whole-home monitoring

The Vue 3 reports the whole panel in the Emporia app, not only the car

  • J1772 or NACS, same price

The NACS connector has a built-in sensor that opens the Tesla charge port

One charger, one monitor, one visit

Load management and whole-home monitoring come in the box

  • The panel upgrade is the expensive part

Emporia puts a typical panel upgrade at $3,000 to $8,000, and notes that most homes do not have panel space for a Level 2 charger. PowerSmart is its alternative: the Vue 3 reads the main service lines through two 200A sensors, and the charger raises or lowers its draw so the house stays within the panel's safe capacity.

UL-certified and NEC-accepted as an alternative to a panel upgrade, per Emporia

  • Installed in the same electrician visit

The charger goes on the wall and the Vue 3 goes inside the service panel, both in one visit. Once it is set up there is nothing to manage: plug in the car and PowerSmart charges at the fastest rate the panel allows.

Monitors the panel 3,000 times per second, per Emporia

  • See the whole house, not only the car

Because the Vue 3 sits in the panel, the free Emporia app shows household energy use alongside charging. Add 50A sensors later for circuit-by-circuit detail.

Vue 3: ±2% accuracy, room for 16 circuit sensors

  • Charge on solar surplus or off-peak rates

When your solar system produces more than the house is using, the Pro can route the surplus into the car. It can also shift charging away from peak-rate hours; Emporia notes that some utilities charge three to four times more at peak.

Excess solar charging and peak demand management, per Emporia

Plain answers

Panel capacity, connectors and installation

Do I still need a panel upgrade?

Emporia states that PowerSmart is UL-certified and accepted under the National Electrical Code (NEC) as an alternative to a panel upgrade, and that it works with Emporia chargers only. Whether it applies to your installation is a call for your electrician and your local inspector, so ask them before you order.

Can I use the Pro without the Vue 3?

The charger can be installed on its own, but PowerSmart, whole-home monitoring and solar charging all read from the Vue 3, which is why it comes in the box.

Which connector for a Tesla?

NACS plugs straight in, and Emporia builds a UHF sensor into that connector which opens the Tesla charge port. J1772 works through the adapter supplied with the car. On the Pro both connectors cost the same.

Plug-in or hardwired?

The plug-in version uses a NEMA 14-50 outlet on a 50A breaker and tops out at 40A (9.6 kW). Hardwiring on a 60A breaker gives the full 48A (11.5 kW). The charger has its own internal GFCI, so Emporia recommends a non-GFCI panel breaker to avoid nuisance tripping. Where local code requires a GFCI breaker on a NEMA 14-50 circuit, Emporia recommends the hardwired version. Your electrician will know which applies.

Can it be installed outdoors?

Yes. The charger enclosure is watertight Type 4 for indoor or outdoor use, rated from -22°F to 122°F. The Vue 3 goes inside your electrical panel.

How is it different from the Classic?

Both share the same output, 25 ft cable, NEMA 4 rating, UL and Energy Star certification and 3-year warranty. The Pro adds PowerSmart, the Vue 3 whole-home monitor, excess-solar charging and peak demand management, and a lower-profile body with a rear-entry hardwire option. If your panel has room for a dedicated 60A circuit and you only want to charge, the Classic is the simpler choice.

Is there a subscription?

No. Charging, scheduling and reports run in the free Emporia app, and Emporia states there is no subscription.

Before you order

Installation

Not a homeowner installation. A licensed electrician mounts the charger and fits the Vue 3 inside your service panel in the same visit. Have them confirm the panel rating and breaker space before the charger arrives: a dedicated 60A double-pole breaker for 48A hardwired, or 50A for the 40A plug-in version.

Shipping and delivery

Ships by parcel carrier. Free shipping on most orders within the continental United States; Alaska and Hawaii are excluded. Installation is not included.

Warranty and returns

Emporia warrants the charger for 3 years and the Vue 3 monitor for 1 year from delivery; the charger warranty applies to installations in North America made per the installation guide, and does not cover labor. Returns are handled under our return and refund policy.
