Description

The Emporia Classic is a straightforward Level 2 EV charger: up to 48 A hardwired or 40 A from a NEMA 14-50 outlet, a 25 ft cable, and a watertight NEMA Type 4 enclosure for a garage wall or an outside one.

It has no load management, so it needs a dedicated circuit with room in your panel. Scheduling, time-of-use charging and a monthly charging report run in the Emporia app over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

What's Included

In the box: The Classic with its 25 ft cable and J1772 or NACS connector, a power cable with a NEMA 14-50 plug or a hardwire whip, a mounting bracket with screws and drywall anchors, and a wall-mounted connector holder with screws and anchors.

Installation and Compatibility

Electrician work: A hardwired charger, or a new 14-50 outlet, is a job for a licensed electrician. Installation is not included. Have your electrician confirm the panel rating, breaker space and any local GFCI rule before the charger arrives.

Connector: Match it to your car's port. J1772 fits most non-Tesla EVs in North America, and NACS fits Tesla and other NACS vehicles.

Check your panel: The Classic needs a dedicated circuit. If your panel has no room for one, add the PowerSmart Upgrade kit, or choose the Emporia Pro, which has load management built in.

Breaker: A dedicated 60 A double-pole breaker for 48 A hardwired, or 50 A for the 40 A plug-in. On a smaller breaker, the charge rate is set lower in the app behind a PIN: 32 A on 40 A, 24 A on 30 A, or 16 A on 20 A.

Wire: 6 AWG copper rated 90°C for a 48 A hardwired circuit.

NEMA 14-50 outlet: It must be an industrial-grade receptacle rated for continuous duty at 50 A, such as Hubbell, Leviton, Bryant or Cooper (Eaton). A standard residential outlet is not built for nightly EV charging.

GFCI breakers: The charger has its own ground-fault protection, so a GFCI breaker on the same circuit can trip without cause. Where code requires a GFCI breaker on a 14-50 outlet, choose the hardwired version.

Mounting: The bottom of the charger at least 24 in above the floor, with the connector holder at least 12 in to the side.

Wi-Fi: Check the 2.4 GHz signal where the charger will hang. A weak signal may need an extender for the app features.

Plug-in to hardwired: The plug-in version can be converted to hardwired later.

Setup help: Questions about installation, setup or the app come to us first.

Warranty

Term: 3 years from the date of delivery on the charger, against defects in materials and workmanship, for chargers installed in North America following the included installation guide.

Not covered: Water damage, use outside the installation guide or Emporia's instructions, and changes to the hardware, including drilled holes. Labor for diagnosis, removal or reinstallation is not covered, and neither is shipping a faulty unit back.

Claims: Keep your order confirmation. Contact us first with your order number and a description of the fault, and we take the claim to Emporia. Emporia repairs or replaces the faulty hardware, or refunds what was paid for it.

Replacement first: When Emporia sends a replacement charger first, the faulty one goes back within 2 weeks of the replacement being installed.

Returns: Within 30 days of delivery, unused and in the original packaging, under our return and refund policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which connector for a Tesla?

Either works. NACS plugs straight in and opens the charge port as you walk up. J1772 needs a J1772-to-NACS adapter, which is not included. The NACS version is priced a little higher.

My panel is full. What now?

The Classic needs its own circuit. Add the PowerSmart Upgrade kit to give it load management, or choose the Emporia Pro, which includes it and is priced below a Classic plus the kit when you are buying new.

Can I install it outside?

Yes. The enclosure is watertight NEMA Type 4 and rated from -22°F to 122°F. Mounted right side up under cover, it does best outdoors.

Plug-in or hardwired?

Plug-in tops out at 40 A on a NEMA 14-50 outlet; hardwired reaches 48 A. If local code calls for a GFCI breaker on the outlet, choose hardwired.

Does it monitor my home's energy use?

No. It reports on charging only. The PowerSmart Upgrade kit or the Emporia Pro adds whole-home monitoring.

Who it is for

For a panel with room to spare

The Emporia Classic is a 48-amp Level 2 charger for homes that can already give it a dedicated circuit: a 60-amp double-pole breaker hardwired, or 50-amp for the NEMA 14-50 plug version. It charges, schedules and reports through the free Emporia app, and on its own it does not manage your home's load. If your panel has no room for that circuit, the Emporia Pro is the better fit when buying new: it includes PowerSmart load management. Already own a Classic? The PowerSmart Upgrade kit adds the same load management.

A dedicated charger that does one job

Level 2 speed, any EV, indoors or out

  • A full charge overnight

Up to 48 amps hardwired, up to 7 times faster than a regular outlet. Schedule charging for the hours your utility charges least, and check the live charge rate and a monthly charging report in the app.

    11.5 kW at 48A · 9.6 kW at 40A

  • One charger for any EV

Choose J1772 for most non-Tesla EVs, or NACS for Tesla and other NACS vehicles. The 25-foot cable stores on a wall-mounted holder.

SAE J1772 or SAE J3400 (NACS), 25 ft cable

  • Built for the garage or the driveway

The Type 4 enclosure is watertight, so the Classic can be mounted indoors or outside. It is rated from -22°F to 122°F.

NEMA Type 4 · ENERGY STAR (ID 2397026)

  • When the panel is the problem, you have two routes

The Classic needs a dedicated circuit of its own. If the panel cannot give it one, add the PowerSmart Upgrade kit — Emporia's Vue monitor plus load management, the same pairing the Pro ships with — and the Classic throttles its charging to stay within the panel's rating. Buying new, the Pro includes it and costs less than the two together.

Plain answers

Panel capacity, connectors and installation

My panel is full. Will the Classic work?

Not without a dedicated circuit. For a full panel, PowerSmart load management is the route: standard on the Pro, and available for the Classic as the PowerSmart Upgrade kit, which puts a Vue monitor in the panel. Buying new, the Emporia Pro is the cheaper route. If you already own a Classic, the kit is the fix.

Which connector for a Tesla?

NACS plugs straight in, and its built-in UHF sensor opens the Tesla charge port. J1772 needs a J1772-to-NACS adapter, which is not included. On the Classic the NACS version costs more than J1772.

Plug-in or hardwired?

The plug-in version uses a NEMA 14-50 outlet on a 50A breaker and tops out at 40A (9.6 kW). Hardwiring on a 60A breaker gives the full 48A (11.5 kW). The charger has its own internal GFCI, so use a non-GFCI panel breaker to avoid nuisance tripping. Where local code requires a GFCI breaker on a NEMA 14-50 circuit, choose the hardwired version. Your electrician will know which applies.

Can it be installed outdoors?

Yes. The enclosure is watertight NEMA Type 4, rated for indoor or outdoor installation from -22°F to 122°F.

Does it monitor my home's energy use?

Not on its own. It reports on charging only. Whole-home monitoring comes from Emporia's Vue monitor, which is included with the Pro and in the PowerSmart Upgrade kit for the Classic.

Does it need Wi-Fi?

For the app features, yes. Scheduling, time-of-use charging and reports run over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so check the signal where the charger will hang. A weak signal may need an extender.

Before you order

Installation

Have a licensed electrician confirm your panel rating and breaker space before the charger arrives: a dedicated 60A double-pole breaker for 48A hardwired, or 50A for the 40A plug-in version. They should also check whether local code requires a GFCI breaker on a NEMA 14-50 circuit, which decides the variant you order.

Shipping and delivery

Ships by parcel carrier. Free shipping on most orders within the continental United States; Alaska and Hawaii are excluded. Installation is not included.

Warranty and returns

Emporia warrants the charger for 3 years from delivery, for installations in North America made per the installation guide; the warranty does not cover labor. Returns are handled under our return and refund policy.
