Four ways to keep the lights on, and three questions that decide which one is yours. The difference is mostly about who does the wiring.
It is not two options, it is four
The question gets framed as portable versus whole-home, but there are two useful steps in between, and most households land on one of those rather than at either extreme.
The real dividing line is not size. It is whether the system touches your electrical panel — because that is what brings in a licensed electrician, a permit, an inspection, and a timeline measured in weeks rather than days.
The four options

1. Portable, plug straight in
Electrician: no. You carry the station to the appliance and plug in. Cheapest, instant, and the unit stays useful for camping and jobsites. You are limited to what reaches an extension lead, and you have to be home to run it.

2. Portable, plug-connected
Electrician: usually, once. An inlet is fitted so the station can feed selected circuits through existing wiring. You still start it manually, but the fridge and the furnace are on real circuits rather than trailing leads.

3. Transfer switch
Electrician: yes. A switch decides which circuits the backup feeds, and switching is clean and safe. This is the tier most households actually want, and where the cost step is.

4. Hardwired whole-home
Electrician: yes, plus permit. The system is part of the house and comes on by itself. The most expensive and the least portable — and the only one that works while you are away.
Three questions that decide it

Are you home when it matters?
If outages happen while you are away — a second home, a freezer full of stock, a sump pump — anything manual is the wrong answer. That pushes you to option 3 or 4 regardless of budget.

Is it appliances or circuits?
If you can name the appliances, options 1 and 2 cover you. If the honest answer is 'the well pump, the furnace and the sump', you are talking about circuits, and that means a transfer switch.

Do you want it the rest of the year?
A portable earns its keep at the campsite and on the jobsite. A hardwired system sits in a cupboard doing nothing until the day it is needed. Both are valid — just be honest about which you want.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just run a cord from a generator into an outlet?
No. Backfeeding a socket is dangerous — it can energise the line outside and it bypasses every protection in the panel. If you want circuits fed, have an inlet or a transfer switch fitted properly.
Do I need a permit?
For a plug-in portable, no. For anything connecting to the panel, requirements vary by city and county. Confirm with your local building authority and use a licensed electrician.
Can I start portable and upgrade later?
Often yes, if you buy a station that supports a transfer switch and expansion batteries. Tell us that is the plan and we will steer you away from the models that dead-end.
How long does an install take?
Once an electrician is booked, a straightforward transfer-switch job is usually short. The wait is the booking and any permit, not the work. Get an estimate before you order the hardware.
