Sunseeker X9 Plus mowing a large lawn in front of a house

Sunseeker X7, X7 Plus, X9 or X9 Plus: which fits your yard

The four larger Sunseeker mowers we sell sit on two platforms. The X7 and X7 Plus share one body; the X9 and X9 Plus share another. Within each pair the machines are close relatives. Between the pairs, almost everything changes. Pick the platform first, then the model.

Every figure below comes from our product pages, which follow Sunseeker's published documentation.

The short version

X7 Plus Gen 2 Up to 1.5 acres 70% (35°) 13.8 in., dual discs RTK from a local antenna station, with VSLAM 2.0 32.0 lb
X9 3 acres on a 48-hour cycle 90% (42°) 17 in., single disc Network RTK with VSLAM 2.0, no antenna station 67.2 lb

Start with the lawn area

Measure the grass you want mowed, not the lot. Driveways, the house footprint and planted beds do not count. Then match the figure to the rating, and leave room at the top rather than buying a mower rated exactly to your lawn.

If the lawn is under half an acre, none of these four is the obvious buy. The X5 Gen 2 is rated to 0.5 acre and the X4 to 0.3 acre, and the X4 navigates by 3D LiDAR rather than satellite positioning.

The X7 and the X7 Plus are the same machine

Same 13.8-inch dual-disc deck, six blades per disc at 2,600–2,800 RPM. Same all-wheel drive with a steering rear wheel, same 10 Ah battery, same 32.0 lb body. The X7 Plus adds three things: a faster 7 A charger in place of the 5 A, 4G GPS anti-theft tracking included as standard with two years of service per Sunseeker's documentation, and a 1.5-acre rating against 0.75. If your lawn is between three-quarters of an acre and an acre and a half, that is the decision made for you.

The antenna station is the real dividing line

The X7 pair positions itself by RTK from a local antenna station that you site on the property, fused with VSLAM 2.0 vision. The X9 pair uses network RTK instead — there is no antenna station to place, power or keep in view of the sky. Sunseeker includes network RTK service and anti-theft for five years as standard on both X9 models.

On a large or broken-up property, not having to site an antenna station is a practical advantage, not a spec-sheet one. On a compact suburban lawn, the station is a one-time job.

Slope and terrain

The X7 pair is rated to 70% (35°) slopes, with front-wheel independent suspension; the X7 Plus adds 8.7-inch off-road front wheels. The X9 pair is four-wheel drive and rated to 90% (42°). If the steepest part of your lawn is beyond 70%, the X9 platform is the only one of these that covers it.

The edges

All four models do ride-on boundary cutting. The X9 Plus goes further, with the EdgeZero trimmer — an articulating arm that trims to the edge the deck cannot reach — included as standard. It is an option on the X9.

Noise and size

The X7 pair works at 60 dB(A). The X9 is 66 dB(A) and the X9 Plus 70 dB(A). The X9 machines are also more than twice the weight, at 67.2 and 72.1 lb against 32.0 lb, and larger at 33.5 in. long.

How we would choose

  • Up to three-quarters of an acre, slopes within 70%: the X7 Gen 2.
  • Three-quarters of an acre to an acre and a half: the X7 Plus Gen 2.
  • Up to three acres, steep ground, or no good place for an antenna station: the X9.
  • Up to six acres, or edges you would otherwise trim by hand: the X9 Plus.

Sunseeker covers each mower for 2 years from purchase and the battery pack for 1 year, per Sunseeker's warranty policy. For the wider questions — wire or no wire, LiDAR or RTK — see our robot mower buying guide.

If you are between two models, send us the lawn area, the steepest slope and a rough sketch of the property through the contact page. We will tell you which one fits, including when it is the smaller one.
